Semestra

Computer or local network

Try Semestra on your own computer, or run it on a machine at home without a domain.

On this computer

docker compose up -d

Open http://localhost:8000. The first start takes under a minute: the container pulls the image, generates its keys and creates the database. Nothing in .env needs to change.

Sign in with any email address. The verification code is printed in the log:

docker compose logs -f semestra

From other devices on your network

Run it on one machine (a home server, a NAS, a spare computer) and open it from your phone or laptop. Set the address the other devices will use in .env:

.env
SEMESTRA_PUBLIC_URL=http://192.168.1.20:8000
docker compose up -d

Links in emails and calendar subscription links use this address. Give the machine a fixed IP in your router so it stays valid.

To reach it from outside your network, put it on a domain with HTTPS instead: Server with a domain.

Stop or remove

docker compose down # stop; data stays in the semestra-data volume
docker compose down -v # stop and delete all data
